Services for Assistance with the Part 3 Examination

Lawrence Johnston provides expert tuition and exam support for Part 3 architectural candidate’s at any UK provider, and for persons not yet enrolled, but seeking advice on how to prepare in advance of making an application for the Part 3 assessment. This service is intended to ‘augment’ the existing Part 3 institutional providers. It responded to the market demand (2015) from sincere candidate’s wishing to attain their personal aspirations to qualify and register as an architect under the 1997 Architect’s Act.

Preparations for undertaking the separate assessment requirements of the Part 3 professional practice examination.
Personal support from experienced Part 3 tutor and former professional examiner including ‘written feedback’ plus ‘face to face’ skype tutorial sessions.
  • Assistance and guidance on preparing for the Part 3 (institutional) examination assessment components, including:
  • Assistance with understanding and answering the contents of the written question papers - either office based/scenario based/institution based/open book/closed book.
  • Rehearsing past examination question papers to improve ‘time management’ and enhance ‘writing skills’ for future assessment. Especially important for ‘time restricted’ question papers, normally at least two required by Part 3 providers.
  • Explaining how to analyse the scenario (if provided), the contents of each question, and mapping it to each of the five professional criteria pc1 to pc 5 together with their 50 sub-sets.
  • Preparing feedback after reviewing the candidate’s answers/responses to the questions. This combines written plus verbal feedback.
  • Advice on how to draft the submission of the CV - what is important to convey to professional examiners.
  • Guidance and direction on the drafting of the “Evaluation of Professional Practice Experience’, also described as a ‘Self-Evaluation report’, or ‘Personal Development Appraisal’ by various Part 3 providers.
  • Advice on which projects would be most suitable for the case study/case studies, also described as the ‘Critical Appraisal Report’ (CAR) and ‘Experience Based Appraisal’ (EBA) by several providers.
  • Providing valuable feedback after appraising the draft contents of the above documents to enhance high quality submissions.
  • ‘Mapping’ the candidate’s draft written documents to each of the 50 sub-sets of the Part 3 professional criteria.
  • Direction with the contents & focus of Certificates of Practice Experience, which can be quite difficult for candidate’s if several years have lapsed since the actual employment occurred.
  • Addressing the providers ‘in house’ assignments/coursework/module units, normally set during the lecture programme, and often ‘internally marked’.

Provision of additional (non-institutional) learning methods, tailored to individual needs.
  • Guidance for persons who are currently working in international practices and wishing to acquire the UK Part 3 professional registration qualification to join the ARB register of architects. A limited selection of UK Part 3 providers currently facilitate this route. Experience has proven that extra tuition is extremely useful for guidance and direction on UK specific criteria, including recently introduced HM Government  legislation, plus the ARB guidance September 2021, covering ‘Ethics and Professionalism’, ‘Fire Safety by Design’ and ‘Environmental Sustainability’.   All of these are currently assessed through the Part 3 examination-2023.
  • Boosting self-confidence through training sessions in verbal communication/presentation techniques via Skype, using a mock oral/professional interview methodology, adopting the role of a professional examiner.
  • Composing individual assignments to cover the five Part 3 professional criteria PC1 to PC 5, together with their 50 sub-sets. This methodology enables candidates to gain knowledge and understanding of those PC’s they are most concerned and worried about.
  • Advising on current professional practice experience and future career plans/prospects/progression.
  • Guidance and direction on the significant transition from ‘salaried employment’ into ‘self-employment’. The challenges, pitfalls and rewards. Responding to the consequences of ‘Brexit’, ‘Covid-19’, and the economic status of the construction sector, and the closely associated architectural professional community.

Specific services for repeat attempts:
  • Re-building a candidate’s self-confidence, frequently encountered following a very disappointing unsuccessful examination outcome. A most important factor, frequently under estimated by institutional providers, who often lack the time & resources to meet individual needs in these circumstances.
  • Closely reviewing the professional examiners feedback and providing additional support to address those components of assessment that did not satisfy the overall ‘competency’ requirements of the registration entry examination to ARB.  For example re-taking the written examination question papers, re-submitting the case study, (previous/new), re-submitting the evaluation of experience, undertaking further practice experience and a second oral/professional interview. Advising on office/employment changes to gain more appropriate practice experience, to satisfy the professional examiners feedback
